Travel was the theme for 2016! In fact we spent more time away from home than here. We accomplished a long dreamed touring ambition, Stephen undertook a lecture tour, we ticked off a bucket list destination and method of transport and we found time to relax in the sun during the UK winter as well as spending time in London working and playing hard - phew!

Part of the plan in moving to our little cottage in Ludlow during autumn 2015, was to pack in as much travel as possible during 2016. Stephen already had his lecture tour to Australia in the diary for September and I'd taken the opportunity to add a "bucket list" visit to the South Sea Islands including a Windstar Cruise en route home in October. Pretty momentous on its own you might think.

Here we are at a wine tasting - nothing special in that you may think, but we are at the Cloudy Bay winery in Marlborough, New Zealand!

And even better than visiting the place which makes my very favourite wine in the world, it exceeded expectations.

So how did we come to be in NZ to welcome in 2014 - this photo was taken on New Year's Eve by the way?

Well, having cruised around South America last winter, my husband (Stephen pictured) mentioned that the only other major itinerary he could be interested in would be Australia and NZ, he'd never visited either before..........

It almost makes me want to delve into the cupboard and drag out my purple and red uniform again. Happy memories of days as a Games Maker in the media and PR Team; journies to Stratford with everyone talking to me and asking about The Games and let's not forget the attitude of the public towards us volunteers - I've never been appreciated so much before and cannot imagine it will ever happen again.

Where has the last 12 months gone? Then we were watching in awe when HM The Queen arrived in the Olympic Stadium with Janes Bond, now we are toasting the arrival of her new great-grandson Prince George of Cambridge. It has certainly been a busy time for me and especially so since retunring from The Incredible Journey.

Sometimes opportunities come along and you just have to take them. Thus was the case with this amazing trip - the longest break I've ever taken - but it was absolutely the right decision - no regrets.

But now I'm back!

During 37 days my husband and i visited 18 ports of call – plus a 3 night inland trip to visit Arequipa, Cusco and Machu Picchu (on 14th Feb, a Valentine’s Day we’ll never forget) - 8 countries and traveled over 8,000 nautical miles – including transiting the Panama Canal - phew!

The Silversea’s Silver Cloud delivered us safely and in the lap of luxury throughout the whole trip – excellent service, accommodation, facilities and food – we instantly felt completely at home.

Every climate from under 10 degrees C to over 30, Glaciers and Fjords to Rain Forest and Tropical Beaches, Snow Capped Volcanoes to Fertile Green Valleys, Penguins to Parrots, Catfish to Crocodiles, dazzling Spanish colonial architecture designed to intimidate and dominate to stunning Inca temples dedicated to the sun, moon, earth and sky, fascinating fish markets to stylish Alpaca stores, Orient Express style luxury train to James Bond style canal boat, rolling seas to millpond calm (the majority).

Going round the house changing the clocks, the cooker, the microwave, the watches to GMT brings home to me that autumn has arrived in earnest. The Great South Run is on TV, the leaves have changed colour to gold from green and T-shirts have been replaced by jumpers in the seasonal wardrobe exchange!

Some may see the changing of the season as a negative in the cycle of life but being ever the positive thinker I see it as a time to refresh, look to new opportunities and even a little self reinvention.

Having had a brilliant summer as a GamesMaker and followed this with a holiday AND another birthday, I find myself with the days I devoted to volunteering available to take on new and exciting projects.
